Lessons from the Lorax

We enjoyed reading through the posts from other classes.  It's great to see that children all around the country are learning about ways to care for the environment.
We decided that we wanted to think a bit more about the book "The Lorax" because this is one we know very well.
We asked ourselves a question.  "What are the lessons about the environment in The Lorax?"
Our teacher showed us how to upload our pictures to Photo Peach.
The Photo Peach slideshow was a bit fast, so we have a Slide Share show too.  That is cool as well, because it links to other children's work on The Lorax.

Composting the Fruit Scraps

Our school is part of the 'Fruit in Schools' programme.

Twice a week we get deliveries of fruit, and each class gets a bucket of fruit to enjoy every day. 
Pineapples are a favourite. 
Other fruits we might get include apples, oranges, pears, plums, melon, kiwifruit and persimmons among others.

We don't put the fruit scraps in with the other rubbish. 
Class monitors take the scraps down to the compost bin.

The scraps get put in the school compost heap and the compost is used on the gardens.

Litter, litter, litter. We can see litter everywhere! Scoring a goal in the trash can isn't a hard job. Did you know that littering can cause lots of damage and problems. These are some examples: It causes sea animals to die, pollution, makes the earth dirty!

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Here at Pinehill School we take looking after the environment seriously.  We do a lot of things to keep our school and the environment clean.

Here are a few things we do around the school:

- We have painted the drains to remind people that these drains only drain rain!
- We sort our rubbish with paper and cardboard boxes separately so they can be recycled properly.
- Walking to school is promoted at our school so we don't use cars as often.
- We also take our own rubbish from our lunch boxes home.

Yesterday our school was awarded the Gold Travelwise School Award and received an additional Walking Award for 'contribution to creating a walking or scooter culture in the school'.  Here is a picture of our school representatives with these awards.

What a Load of Rubbish!

 Today we read about Sommerville’s Wrapper Free Wednesday and it got us thinking… Just how much rubbish does our school create in a day? We decided to find out how much rubbish goes into our bins after a typical morning tea. Some of the Neinsteins went out and collected all of the wrappers and, bags and gladwrap from morning tea. Some children could not give us any as their food was packed into plastic containers instead of being wrapped up.

We were surprised by the results  so we researched a little bit further and found out to our horror that gladwrap can take 1000 years to decompose, foil will take 100 years and paper takes about 2-6 weeks.

This maths inquiry is going to turn into a mini inquiry. We have asked ourselves "So What?" Now that we know this, what will we do about it?

Wrapper Free Wednesday !

Today at our School we started a trial of bringing our lunches without wrappers or anything that has to be thrown away.

So how does this work?

On Wednesday, week 8, 9 & 10 of this term, all lunchbox’s will be free of all wrappers, glad wrap, snap lock bags and paper wrappers.

Each Wednesday morning the class councillor or teacher checks all the lunch boxes of the students.

If the lunchbox is completely empty then you get your name on a list and at the end when everyone's lunch box has been checked then you add up how many people had no wrappers in their lunchbox and you get 2 house points per person eg. If you have 30 students then that's 60 house points. 

(Teachers are also expected to contribute to the cause as well so you can blame your teacher if you don't get lots of house points)

By the way some teachers take it seriously like ours and he brought a wrapper free lunch so you can't blame him !

How can we help?

How can we help our world?

Room 9 at Point View School have been thinking about how they can help the environment so that our world is a better place to live.
Last week we brainstormed a number of ways we can help our world.

• Turn off the lights when I am not in the room

• Turn the tap off when I am brushing my teeth

• Put my rubbish in the bin at school

• Reuse paper and then recycle it
Plant trees and plants so that we have oxygen to breathe

• Don't throw rubbish in the sea so sea animals don't eat it and get sick

Building an EnviroSchool

We are an EnviroSchool and we encourage litterless  lunch boxes. In Term 1 we also had a Waste Audit to measure our waste. Our EnviroSchool follows R-R-R; Reuse - Reduce - Recycle. We  have a Worm Farm to get rid of our food waste. Our school is planning for a Compost bin and vegetable gardens.


Kiwi Kai
Our school is an Enviro this mean that there is no rubbish lying around our school. To keep it this way we have a thing call “Kiwi Kai”. Kiwi Kai in māori means Kiwi food. These litterless lunches help students to care for the environment because they don’t have litter that they would be tempted to throw on the ground.  We have been successful in our idea because children are picking up rubbish that they see on  the ground and there has been a decrease in the amount of rubbish in the landfill bin.


Worm Farm/Compost
In term 1 we did a waste audit and found our school makes lots of food waste so we decided we needed a worm farm. All food scraps go into a small bin which gets dumped into the worm bin each day.             The worms eat all the rubbish they produce worm tea and castings,we save the worm tea to feed the vegetable gardens. We have just got our worm farm a few days ago.It is working really well we have produced half a litre of worm tea.

Veggie Garden
At HPS we are designing a vegetable garden. The plant/seedling group are researching plants for our garden. We also have a construction team, without them we would have nowhere to grow our seeds and plants. In our veggie garden we plan to plant vegetables such as peas, broad beans, winter lettuce, carrots, onions, radish and more to come. Once we start harvesting our garden we plan to cook, sell and eat our produce.

Enviro Week

It is important that we don't litter. To encourage this,we have Enviro Week. It's a week when everyone thinks about looking after planet Earth.We need to save Earth. There are lots of ways to do this. For example,we could turn off lights when we leave a room,and we could also turn off appliances such as microwaves,ovens,etc,to save electricity.

We should reduce,reuse,recycle to decrease the number of rubbish left around for nature.Instead of using a computer you could read a book or play outside to save energy.You could turn the tap off when you're brushing your teeth to save water.You can reuse paper to decrease the number of trees being cut down and increase the oxygen for us,recycle fizzy drink bottles and more.You should give Mother Nature a rest and do it for her.

Teachers and parents are encouraging children to save eletricity because, if no-one in the world  bothers to try, the Earth will no longer be there for our future generations.

Did you know that if we drop our rubbish such as chip packets into the drainit will go into the sea and dolphins and whales and fish who eat it can die?

Make a difference to Earth by doing all the above things.
Remember, every little bit counts!

We need to save our earth.There are lots of ways.

For Term 2, Room 20 have been studying about Renewable Energy.


We have learnt that renewable energy is environmentally friendly and is a nature's way of creating the electro energy we use all around.There are many ways of producing renewable energy.Windmills/Turbines are most commonly used here in New Zealand.Hydropower and Geothermal are also friendly for the environment.


We experimented and made pin wheels to get the basic idea on how Wind Turbines work.


I think that this is a great way of making energy- especially because it's good for the environment!

We could save electricity,water,trees and air.There are lots of ways.We could save water by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth,Reduce,Reuse,Recycle paper and glass bottles.We can reuse paper to decrease the number of trees getting cut down,turn off lights when we leave a room,etc.
We could turn off appliances when we aren't using them and more!
Saving Earth is really important.We all need to do it.Remember,every bit counts!

 This weeks topic is environmentally friendly.It's important that we don't litter because the rubbish goes down the drain and into the sea then sea animals die. We should also turn off power switches when were not at home. Because the power that it comes from a that factory burns coal and from that dirty steamy comes out and pollutes the air which kills trees and trees are environmentally friendly.

It is very important to turn off your appliances when they are not in use because you are wasting a lot of energy. If you waste a lot of energy you will damage the environment and some trees and plants get killed and chopped down. If too many trees get cut down we will have no more oxygen left. So instead of playing on the computer or game consoles go outside and have fun with your family and friends.

You should all ways remember that only rain goes in drains because you may not know this but when things besides rain go in it can kill the sea life and can destroy our environment. So when you're hanging out with your friends and they're too lazy too get up and walk over to the rubbish bin and want to put their rubbish in the bin tell them not to put it down the drain and put it in their pocket.

ENERGY

Wind Turbines are eco friendly, but very noisy.

Solar panels are related to photovoltaic cells (PVC).

Dams usually take a lot of water.

Some people support Nuclear power,some people don't. In Japan last year the nuclear power plant got destroyed and created lots of damage.


Fossil fuels are stuff like oil and coal and gases but  is bad for the enviroment.

Chemical energy comes from stuff like batteries and humans. 

Geo-thermal energy is energy from the earth.
