Olympics Kick Off!

Almost there...the countdown is into the HOURS now! Wow! What would it feel like to be an Olympic athlete, ready in the village, preparing for the opening ceremony? How would you feel to be Nick Willis, ready to carry the New Zealand flag out into the stadium, leading the hopes of New Zealand as you lead the athletes?

Honey, one of the Year 3 students in our class, has been thinking about the Olympics a lot. Her dad is a chef and he loves to bake too so they have made these awesome cupcakes to celebrate the start of the Olympic Games 2012.

Olympic Games

In R3 at Russell Street School we have been learning lots of different things about the Olympic Games.

Today we learnt about the Olympic Creed. Here it is: "The most important thing is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

We watched this video which we think is a great example of the Olympic Creed at work! Check it out!

We have also been learning about some of the cities that have hosted the Olympics. We made a Google Map with their locations. Check it out!

The Olympics Values

As part of learning about the Olympic Games, we are also examining the qualities of an Olympic athlete and the values that the games aspire to bring out in others. Each day, we have a medals ceremony and 3 people win gold, silver or bronze for their efforts in displaying these values.

Here are our first winners of this week:

has been lit at the Olympic Games opening ceremonies throughout the years.
We can't wait to see how the cauldron will be lit this year!

Passing The Torch

Here's the next challenge...what are the most interesting facts you have found about the Olympics?

What would you like to know about the Olympics?

What is your favorite Olympic sport?

Who is your favorite Olympian?

What predictions can you make about this year's Olympics?

What are the pros and cons of being the host nation?

What is is the purpose of the Olympic Games?

What were the Ancient Olympics?

Let's see if we can add some really interesting facts and finds as well as our curious questions and then pass-on-the-torch to another class to see what they can find out! OR what they can ask!

Keep the torch burning...

Lessons from the Lorax

We enjoyed reading through the posts from other classes.  It's great to see that children all around the country are learning about ways to care for the environment.
We decided that we wanted to think a bit more about the book "The Lorax" because this is one we know very well.
We asked ourselves a question.  "What are the lessons about the environment in The Lorax?"
Our teacher showed us how to upload our pictures to Photo Peach.
The Photo Peach slideshow was a bit fast, so we have a Slide Share show too.  That is cool as well, because it links to other children's work on The Lorax.
